Playing Piano ( The basics)

Here are some basic techniques that apply to all types of pianos.

The black keys

If you are a beginner, it is best to start out by playing the black keys. As the name implies, these keys are black, and they are the easiest to identify. The white keys are actually a little more difficult because there is no visual differentiation between them. You’ll have to memorize which note corresponds with each key when you play piano for beginners.

Simple melody and harmony

In order to understand how to play piano well, it’s important that you learn how to create melodies! Try playing phrases that go up or down on your keyboard. Don’t worry about following the guidelines above just yet; this is just practice for now. Then have another person join in and play the same notes as you do. This will lead into the next step!

How to play in harmony with yourself or others

The most important skill that you can learn when playing piano is how to play with someone else. Next, practice playing a melody with another and then trying your hand at creating harmonies. Practice playing chords together, as well. You can even try singing along with your friend! This is a great way to get better at playing piano.

Connecting chords within a key

This part is very important because it’s what will allow you to play any key on the piano. You have to learn how to connect two or more chords together with your fingers. This includes the major, minor, diminished, and augmented. To begin with, try playing a few different chords in a key that you’re familiar with. Next, try connecting two or more of those chords together! Try connecting C Major Seven Chords together with G Minor Seven Chords, E Minor Seven Chords together with C Major Seven Chords, etc. It’s really fun! Then play those same chords in another key and see how difficult they become. This will keep you on your toes.

Chord shapes

When connecting chords together, it’s very important that you are able to link them correctly. There are two types of links: tetrachord and hexachord. Tetrachords are the most common and easy to remember because they look like a four shape (C – D – E – F). Hexachords, on the other hand, look like a six-sided shape (C – E – G – A/Bb – C/Db). The next step is to try connecting these shapes together with each other.

The white keys

The white keys are very important because it is what will allow you to play any key on the piano. You have to learn how to connect the two rows of W keys together, starting from D and going up. Afterward, you will have to connect the two rows for E (from D and going down) and F (from E and going up). Practice playing simple melodies in these two keys until you are able to play them without making mistakes. It’s a good idea to practice these at least once a day if you want to become an excellent pianist.
