Italian Indian cuisine

Compare foods: Indian, Italian and Healthy

When someone tells you to compare foods and asks you “what comes first in your mind when you hear the word ‘food'”, what are your thoughts – Indian foods, Italian foods, or healthy foods? Maybe all three images come to mind on their own. Maybe it’s not that simple for you.

And that’s okay! There are some foods which we all recognize as strong examples of particular cuisines. And then there are those which fall into a different category and can be harder to recognize at first glance. In an effort to help someone in need make an informed decision about what they eat, I offer the following comparison between Indian, Italian, and “healthy”.

While some countries have their own specific identities, a lot of others are simply kinds of blends. In the case of India and Italy, the blend is how each country combines native ingredients with flavors from its neighbor. India has a history as an ancient region on the world map since prehistoric times; Indians have been cooking and eating food for thousands of years, which we still see in their cuisine today.

In contrast, Italy has been around only since 1500 years and it is shaped by a city-state which was not much more than a collection of villages when the country was founded in the Middle-Ages. The Italian cuisine combines traditional Italian dishes with tastes from Greek, Spanish and French cuisines as well.

It’s a very tasty and delicious way to enjoy three kinds of food at once. And for those who are interested, here’s the comparison to help you decide which one is more healthy.

Dairy-rich and dairy-free foods

healthy foods

Indian cuisine has been famous for its use of dairy products as part of everyday meals. By adding some yogurt, cream or ice-cream in your food, it can serve as a delicious and healthy dish.

On the other hand, Italians tend to eat less dairy than Indians because they prefer their traditional dishes without heavy cream or fatty ingredients such as butter (the Italian name for these types of ingredients is “parmigiano“). More traditional households that still use dairy products in the form of fresh cheese, cream or butter uses much less than people from other countries.

A good example is the country’s own pizza and other baked goods. Italians eat these foods mostly without any additional toppings aside from tomatoes and cheese –and if you add a little bit of mozzarella on top, it can be a great meal for both kids and adults. Also, Italians don’t tend to eat ice-creams after 6 PM in their daily routine, unlike Indians who like to eat ice-creams any time of morning or afternoon.

An Italian dish which is similar to Indian curries and that also has a slight resemblance to Indian dishes is the pasta -pasta in Italian. It’s a long, hollow pasta which is either served as a main dish or as part of an antipasto. The best way to enjoy your pasta like an Italian would be to mix it with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese, so that you can enjoy the taste of both your favorite dishes at the same time.

What for a vegetarian or vegan?

If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, the best way to enjoy both Italian and Indian cuisine is to eat healthy. Simply replacing regular pasta with whole wheat pasta can be a great thing at the same time. Also, you can use vegetables as your primary ingredient and make a healthy vegetarian dish that features flavors of Indian cuisine.

Artificial sweeteners vs natural sweeteners:

The sweetness of everyday food is always one of the first things that people notice. If you want to learn how to cook like an Indian, then, you need to understand how they use sugar in their foods just like in any other cuisine. The most famous example is India’s traditional desserts which are all based on sugar and nuts.

However, on the other side of the world, Italians rely mainly on natural sweeteners like honey instead of sugar. They also have delicious fruits such as figs but they don’t use them as much because they’re perceived to be more healthy. Another example is sauerkraut and kimchi- both are considered to be foods full of good bacteria which can help with digestion and weight loss (these foods also act as probiotics). If you’ve watched a few episodes of Masterchef Australia recently then you will know that a perfect dish in Italy is an antipasto which includes sausages and other cured meats such as prosciutto or salami.

If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, the answer is pretty simple. Indians love to add sugar in their food and no one can blame them with the use of delicious food seasonings in their dishes. If you’re new to Indian cooking, I recommend you to try mixing sweet ingredients such as mangoes and jaggery, so that you can enjoy your favorite meal while watching your figure, too. On the other hand, vegetarians and vegans can do a lot of things which will allow them to eat healthy Indian recipes every day, too.

The spices of India vs Italian food spices:

Indian cuisine is famous for its use of flavors like cardamom, cinnamon and chili. Generally, each Indian dish has several spices that can add flavor to your food. It’s important to understand the taste of each spice so that you can mix them together in the right proportion and create amazing blends which are not only delicious but healthy as well.

Spices are very important for Italians as well. They have a lot of herbs which go perfectly with their traditional dishes including basil, oregano, rosemary and thyme. They also love garlic, onions and olives while they tend to dislike tomatoes (and it’s easy to understand why).
However, the way that people around the world enjoy spices is actually not that different. In Italy, they like mixing a number of spices together so that they can make a delicious sauce to go with their favorite meals while Indians usually use each one of them in their own dishes separately.

But the most important question: Are they healthy?

While Indian cooking is considered to be healthy and its local dishes are packed with tons of vitamins, carbs and minerals, many Italians enjoy the same foods with added vegetables and low fat content. They have a wide variety of dishes which are mostly full of herbs, vegetables and low-fat proteins.

It’s very important in Italian cooking to make sure that you add enough herbs so that your mouth can smell the spices in your food when you’ve cooked it. Italians usually use basil or oregano but they also like adding garlic, onions while they’re also fond of olives and tomatoes.

Recommended:

Many Indian dishes can be mistaken for Italian dishes and vice versa (there are at least a dozen of such examples). It’s a good thing if you can learn how to cook both cuisines, because you can make a variety of amazing meals for your family or friends. You will never have boredom if you’re able to create tons of different recipes on your own, so that you and your loved ones don’t have to eat the same type of foods again and again.

To conclude the article, we want to ask you a question. What are your favorite foods: Indian or Italian cuisine? Do you think that they’re as similar as we’ve explained above?
